HISTORY

For years, the inhabitants of Valpelline have been meeting for two important moments linked to the agricultural world and the mountains: the inarpa and the désarpa.
The first one takes place in May and sees the cows move to higher pastures, the so-called “alpeggi”. The second one, towards the end of September-October, celebrates the return of the herd and the shepherds accompanied by the sound of bells signalling the arrival of the procession.
The cow that has produced the most milk during the summer season is given the title of "milk queen" and the one that has excelled during the summer in terms of combativeness is elected "queen of the horns".

THE GREAT FEAST OF THE RETURN TO THE VALLEY

A tradition that is synonymous with celebration: the descent of the cows into the valley after the summer in the alpine pastures is a fundamental moment for the Valpelline community, which, between the end of September and the beginning of October, celebrates the hard work and toil of its farmers.

Come and discover why the cows are adorned with bosquets of different and bright colours; let the sound of cowbells and the vibration of the herd transport you to an authentic and sincere dimension, as genuine as the Valpelline that will welcome you with open arms.

Nature decides times and reactions, man interprets the will of the animals and descends into the valley with them, accompanying the festive procession through the streets and roads of the area ready to come alive with energy that is passed down from year to year and generation to generation. It is the cows that set the pace and mark the moments of a unique event, which has been repeated for centuries, but is never the same.

The event is seasonal and takes place every end of September and October, without fixed dates but according to the choice of the shepherds.

TESTIMONIES

THE ALPINE PASTURE OF THE JORDANEY BROTHERS

“Hearing the sound of the cowbells of our cows returning from the mountain pastures is a great emotion that has accompanied us for generations.”

VENTURINI'S MOUNTAIN PASTURE IN BERRIER

“LEvery year, the désarpa reminds us that it is Nature that sets the pace, not the other way round. The cows let us know when it's time to come down and we have to be able to interpret their 'signals'. It happened that the cows came down practically by themselves, without even waiting for us!"

THE ALPINE PASTURES OF ANGELO AND ALAIN LETEY

“For my family, the changing of the cowbells and the Désarpa are not just work, but a tradition that has been carried on for 30 years, with the same dedication and passion, despite the difficulties faced by those who do this job today"
